The Versus Anthology

Open Submissions for The Versus Anthology

Versus is a collection of works based on the theme of pitting iconic characters or forces against one another (for example, “Jesus VS Thor” or “Adolph Hitler VS Grendel”); this anthology is edited by Josh Woods and is set for release in the spring of 2009 by Press 53 (please visit at www.press53.com ). Versus already includes a great host of writers, such as Pinckney Benedict, Michael Kimball, Margaret McMullan, Kyle Minor, Andrew Scott, Curtis Smith, Susan Woodring, and many others, but we have also held a few spots open in order to give everyone interested the opportunity to join this anthology, so here is that opportunity.

We’re looking mostly for short fiction of around 1,000-1,500 words, but Versus is open to longer works as well as poetry, creative non-fiction, short screenplays, flash fiction, graphic novel pages, and even hybrid genres. Submissions can be previously published elsewhere as long as the writer has, or can obtain, (re)publication rights. Simultaneous and multiple submissions are allowed, but due to the volume of submissions we will be unable to communicate about individual manuscripts other than to indicate that they are accepted or rejected. We will not respond prior to the submission deadline.

The deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2008.

Please send submissions by email attachment in Microsoft Word compatible format or as Adobe PDF to versusanthology@gmail.com , or submit by mail with SASE to:

Versus Anthology
Faner Hall 2390, MC 4503
SIU Carbondale
1000 Faner Hall
Carbondale, IL 62901

Cover letter is optional, but please include your name and email address on each page of the manuscript. For these few remaining spots in Versus, we are setting our focus on new, emerging, and innovative writers. For further details on what a Versus piece is, or even for the option of getting assigned a set of characters for your Versus piece, please visit www.myspace.com/versusanthology.

Niteblade Fantasy and Horror Magazine Anthology #1

Submissions Guidelines for Niteblade Fantasy and Horror Magazine Anthology #1 (Currently Untitled)
Anthology Submission Guidelines

General:
Every fifth issue of Niteblade Magazine will be a print anthology. This anthology will include the best of the last four web-based issues (half chosen through reader votes and half by the editors) as well as new material that hasn’t appeared in Niteblade before. In order to be considered for the former selections you need to have your work accepted in the e-zine. These submission guidelines are meant to cover the new material.

The cover artwork for the first print ezine has been chosen already. It is a wonderful piece by Marge Simon. All anthology submissions should be, in some way, inspired by it. The top three stories and the top three poems, will be included in the print anthology.

Illustration can be found here.

Rights:
Niteblade Fantasy and Horror Magazine will require the non-exclusive right to use your story or poem in our print anthology. They would ask that you wait to submit your work elsewhere until six months after the print anthology is published, but they will not contractually obligate you to do so.

Payment:
Niteblade wants to pay you lots, truly — but until Niteblade gets off its feet and is able to support itself the best offer is one US dollar per story or poem and a contributor’s copy of the book. Payment will be made by your choice of paypal, epassporte or a donation to Duotrope’s Digest and will be paid upon acceptance.

For all submissions please email your story or poem as an .rtf or .doc attachment to anthology@niteblade.com

Make sure you have the word ‘Niteblade’ ‘Submission’ or ‘Query’ in the subject somewhere. Any one will do, you don’t need to use all three.

When submitting prose please single space your work and do not indent new paragraphs.

Please include your legal name, snail mail address and the name you want your story published under.

For stories 10,000 words or longer, please query first with a detailed synopsis. Keep in mind that longer stories are a harder sell than shorter ones.

Considering the nature of this anthology it probably goes without saying, but no simultaneous submissions or reprints.

No multiple submissions please. Only one story and up to 5 poems per author will be considered.

What they like…
The best way to see what they like is to check out the current issue — all it will cost you is time. Remember that your submission for this anthology needs to be inspired in some way by the illustration above.

Deadline:
Submissions will close on July 15, 2008 and all regrets and acceptances will be sent out by the end of that month.

If you have any other questions please email rhonda@niteblade.com and she will respond as soon as possible.

Please consider tracking your submission and reporting your response at Duotrope’s Digest or Ralan’s Webstravaganza

A SECOND CUP OF COMFORT FOR DOG LOVERS

A SECOND CUP OF COMFORT FOR DOG LOVERS

Oh, how we humans love our canine companions -- for so many reasons and in so many ways that one Cup of Comfort collection of uplifting dog stories just wasn’t enough. So we’re giving all you dog-loving writers another opportunity to share your personal stories of canine comfort with a growing legion of dog-loving readers. This volume will feature both serious and humorous anecdotal stories covering a wide range of topics and perspectives and varying breeds of dogs. We do NOT want sad stories about a dog’s illness, injury, or death, though we will consider stories that weave a beloved pet’s illness or death into an otherwise positive story. The story should focus on the dog’s remarkable attributes and/or actions as well as on the special relationship between the dog and his/her human(s).

Alone In The Dark Anthology

Alone in the Dark (tentative title) will feature the outer spectrums of horror and will be edited by Kody Boye and published in a 6x9 tradepaperback via Lulu.com.

Looking for tales of different kinds of horror that go beyond the normal variety of monsters, vampires, werewolves and zombies (though if your tale is COMPLETELY different and includes one or more of those monsters, send it in. It's unlikely We'll accept stories that are straight of that genre unless they are brilliant.) We're tired of seeing that kind of horror done over several times and want to see horror that is different, horror that is different but at the same time sticks to the common genre that horror is: scary, surreal and/or weird.

The horror we are looking for should be different, as stated above. It can be a monster tale if you want it to be, but it most be different/unique/or brilliant enough for us to accept it. The horror can be of any kind of type (paranormal, modern, bizzare) and can feature creatures, serial killers, and that other kind of stuff. I want something that can blow me out of the ballpark, and if you can do that you're guaranteed acceptance in. The theme must be horror; straight horror. No science fiction, no fantasy, nothing of that sort. If your tale is somewhat of a western setting it needs to have horror. It should generally stick to the ways of people 'being afraid or wary of the dark' for some reason or another. It doesn't even have to have a monster in it, but if you can pull of the main character[s] being afraid of the dark without one, do so.

Currently paying $5.00, but this could change if they get a traditional place to pick it up (which would require good fiction). For now, though, five dollars is all they're paying, and they'll be accepting around ten-thirteen stories depending on their length,

WHAT RIGHTS?

First print rights, exclusive print rights one year from the time of publication. You as the author retain the right to the story and may submit it after that one-year period.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY STORY BE?

Due to me not being able to pay for longer stories (novellas and other stories) your story should be 3,000-5,000 words. If you want to submit something longer, query first. Be forewarned, I will pay the same five dollars even if the story is longer.

HOW DO I SUBMIT?

Send the file as an attachment (.DOC or .RTF, don't place it as a PDF or HTML or other document) to kodyboye@q.com . Stories should be double-spaced and use Times New Roman or Arial font at 12 pt. size. Don't copy or paste your story into the email. Contact information and word count at the top of the first page of the document on the first page.

Include a bio, story publication history and other relevant information in the body of the email.

WHAT'S THE DEADLINE?

I will read until Halloween or until the anthology is filled.

WHAT'S THE READING TIME?

Stories we like will generally be held until submissions close. Rejections will go out in four-six weeks.

HOW DO I KNOW YOU'VE RECEIVED MY SUBMISSION?

I will email you as soon as I get the story.

WHAT ABOUT MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS?

Don't send more than one story at a time. You may send another if your story is rejected.

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS?

You may send your story to other markets as well, just be sure to tell us if your story is accepted by another market.

ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE ME A DETAILED RESPONSE IF YOU REJECT MY STORY?

I will try to, but don't expect it. I always try to tell the authors what I did or didn't like about the stories.

LIMITS ON WRITING?

No, not as far as general things go. I don't want to see any abuse to children, animals or necrophillia. Other than that, there's no limits as long as it fits within the story. Also, no hardcore sexual stories. There can be a little, but many times it doesn't help with stories.

DO YOU NEED A COVER ARTIST?

Yes, and cover artists will receive the five dollars plus a copy of the book. I'd do so for the contributors, but the cover artist makes the book flashy. Send me samples with 'Cover Artist' and samples or links to your samples to kodyboye@q.com.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS:

Email me at kodyboye@q.com .

Submission Guidelines - January 2008

I co-edit the World Fantasy Award winning anthology series The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror (St. Martin's Press) with Kelly Link & Gavin Grant. We are now reading for the 22nd volume, which will include all material published in 2008.

I am looking for stories from all branches of horror: from the traditional-supernatural to the borderline, including high-tech sf horror, supernatural stories, psychological horror, dark thrillers, or anything else that might qualify. If in doubt, send it. This is a reprint anthology so I am only reading material published in or about to be published in 2008. Submission deadline for stories is December 15th 2008. Anything sent after this deadline will reach me too late. If a magazine, anthology, or collection you're in or you edit is coming out by December 31st, you can send me galleys or manuscripts so that I can judge the stories in time. No e-mail submissions. I strongly suggest that authors check with their publishers that they are sending review copies out to me as I don't have time or energy to nag publishers to get me material. I request it once (maybe twice) and that's it.

There are summations of "the year in horror," and "the year in fantasy" in the front of each volume. These include novels, nonfiction, art books, and in my section, "odds and ends"-- material that doesn't fit anywhere else but that I feel might interest the horror reader. But I have to be aware of this material in order to mention it. The deadline for this section is January 30th, 2009.

Kelly & Gavin cover fantasy and I cover horror. If you consider something both, send a copy to each of us. We do not confer on our choices.

****I do not want to receive manuscripts from authors of stories from venues that it's likely I already receive regularly (like Interzone, The Third Alternative, Cemetery Dance, Subterranean, Postscripts, Weird Tales, F&SF, etc) or from anthologies and collections, unless I don't have or can't get that anthology or collection. What I would prefer is if you contact your publisher and ask him/her to send me the magazine or book.

And please do not send a SASE. If I choose a story you will be informed. If you want to confirm that I've received something, enclose a self-addressed-stamped postcard and I will let you know the date it arrived. For stories that appear on the web, please send me (or have the publisher send me) print-outs of your story.

A Cup of Comfort for Fathers

A Cup of Comfort for Fathers

The connection between father and child can be as deep as the ocean, as strong as a mountain, and as uplifting as fresh air. For all its rewards, though, fatherhood is not without its challenges. And for all the gifts dads bring to their kids' lives, dads sometimes falter and fumble. Yet, the father-child bond forms, holds, and grows. A Cup of Comfort for Fathers will feature inspiring and insight true stories about the life-defining and life-enriching relationships and experiences shared by fathers and their children. These personal essays will be of varying topics and tones (heartwarming, humorous, poignant, provocative, etc.); about fathers and children of all ages and varying circumstances; and written by fathers, daughters, and sons.

Fathers submission deadline: August 1, 2008

FREEZE FRAME

Here's a prompt for a writing contest I thought I'd share with my readers.

FREEZE FRAME

Describe a single moment in time just after something has happened so clearly that the reader can understand what happened without having "seen" it happen. Think of a photograph, as opposed to a movie. Try to imply an entire story with beginning, middle, and end in one frozen moment. Remember not to leave that moment in time! Don't tell the reader anything that the reader could not perceive if the reader were in the scene you're describing.

One entry per author. The mini-story should be between 50 and 100 words long. Hyphenated words count as separate words: "jack-o-lantern" counts as three words.

Deadline: 11:59 PM Eastern time, Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Prizes: $15 for 1st, $10 for 2nd, $5 for 3rd, publication but no money for honorable mentions.

Send entries to Entries@OnThePremis es.com and put MINI-CONTEST in the subject heading, please. As with our regular contests, put your contact information in the body of your e-mail and
attach your mini-contest entry as a .doc, .rtf, or .txt file. (No .wps files! We can't read them.)

GIANT CREATURES ANTHOLOGY

GIANT CREATURES ANTHOLOGY To be Edited by Ryan C. Thomas…

There was a time when the atomics industry fueled more than political debate—it fueled the growth spurts of God’s creatures, which turned the tables against the domineering species known as man. Giant spiders, towering ants, train-sized gila monsters, praying mantises larger than 747s, and yes, even mutated leeches big enough to swallow you whole.

These were the themes behind the classic Creature Feature films of the 50s and 60s. By the 70s we learned that no amount of atomic radiation would cause a flea to grow so large it could leap across an entire city, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look back on those drive-in films with a sense of fondness. They are as fun today as they were back then. It was, after all, the sight of these giant beasts attacking man that became the catalyst for many of today’s horror writers to pick up a pen.

Permuted Press is now opening up submissions to fill a collection of original giant creature stories for an anthology to be released in 2008. We are looking for stories in the 3000-5000 word range (query for longer tales). Care to show us what happens when the tiny become the mighty?

Reading Period: Dec 5th to March 31st or until filled. Because we have invited a number of popular authors to participate, there are only a select number of open spaces left, so don’t wait.

What we want: Original stories of animals/insects/etc. grown to enormous sizes (or at least vastly bigger than they should be). Take something that exists on earth and show us what happens when it gets really big. Anything from germs to spiders to rodents to monkeys to naked mole rats to swordfish…the opportunities are endless. Stories can be set in any location at any time period. Monsters need not be the result of radiation either—King Kong was simply big. Get creative, people. All genres welcome. (And please note this is not a Daikaju book…so Godzilla stories will be a very hard sell). Yes, giant people are okay, but you’ll need to really impress us. Same with plants.

What we don’t want: No fan fiction or reprints. Again, try to stay away from Japanese Monsters…there are already anthos out there for that. No aliens or mythological creatures (stories CAN have sci fi elements, however). Think outside the box—we can only print one story of the army fighting a giant insect, if you get our drift.

Payment: Authors will receive a flat payment of $15 via Paypal and a contributor copy of the book.

Submission guidelines: Email your manuscript as an attachment to permutedgiants@yahoo.com Please use a 12-point readable font – SINGLE SPACED. Include your name and email on the cover page. Place the title of the story, page number, and your name in the header of each page. Please only submit one story at a time. No simultaneous submissions.

Return time: We will get back to you as quickly as we can.

Few experiences bring forth as many anxieties, blessings, challenges, wonders, and changes as having a baby—whether it's your first child or fifth, your birth child or adopted child. And nothing is as miraculous as giving birth to or witnessing the birth of your baby. This heartwarming anthology will be filled with birth stories and newborn homecoming stories as well as a wide range of stories about the various experiences, emotions, and concerns involved in adding a new baby to one's life and family. Potential topics include but are not limited to: nursing (or not), caring for a newborn, bonding/falling in love with infant, lack of sleep, relationship with spouse, how siblings respond, returning to work, balancing responsibilities, post-partum depression, self transformation, unexpected joys, life lessons, small miracles, etc. The majority of the stories will be about birth children, but the book will likely include a couple adoptive stories as well. Likewise, most of the stories will be written from the new mother's perspective, but we are open to including a few stories written from the spouse's or a very close family member's perspective. All stories will be uplifting and positive, no matter how difficult the situation portrayed in the story might be. We do not want stories that simply recount misfortunes and
sorrows and that do not clearly reveal a positive outcome or redeeming result (silver lining).

A Cup of Comfort for Military Families

It has been said that military life is "not for the faint of heart."
But neither is it without its benefits and blessings. One thing is
certain: it is an experience like no other—for both the soldiers and
their families.

For this book, we want positive stories about how
military life affects the personal lives of service men and women
(enlisted and officers), how family affects soldiers' on the job, and
how military life affects family members (primarily spouses, children,
and parents but also siblings, grandparents, grandchildren,
aunts/uncles, fiancés, etc.). Any situation or subject that is
significant and/or unique to military personnel and their loved ones
is acceptable. Our goal is to compile a collection of inspiring or
uplifting stories that cover a wide range of topics and reveal a
variety of perspectives, experiences, and emotions specific to
military families. Stories may be written by the service man or woman
or a close family member; military service may be current, recent, or
past.
