Call for Submissions
I'm taking submissions for an anthology of essays, short stories, and poetry inspired by Newbery award-winning books. I'm interested in discovering how a particular Newbery book influenced you (or someone you know), or made a difference to you, at any age.
Did you try to hide overnight at the Met because you read From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler? Maybe you once survived a week in the tundra because you read Julie of the Wolves. Maybe you read Johnny Tremain and then you became obsessed with American history and you've written a great short story about Paul Revere. Or your kid read A Wrinkle In Time and now you're helping her build a tesseract in the garage! This is the sort of thing I'm looking for — something about a Newbery book that will resonate with everyone else who's ever read it.
The list of Newbery recipients is here. I am currently taking submissions dealing with both Newbery award winners and honorees.
Deadline for submissions: November 1, 2009
Please follow these guidelines for submission:
* Don't submit works in progress.
* Everything must be submitted electronically.
* Don't submit someone else's work for them — submit your own work yourself.
* Don't submit something that was published somewhere else before.
* No fan-fiction, spin-offs, sequels, prequels, crossovers or erotica.
* Poetry is acceptable. Your poem should not be longer than 2 printed pages.
* Essays and short stories should be shorter than 7500 words.
* For text submissions, please attach the file to your email. I will accept submissions in .doc, .rtf or .txt format. If you're submitting a .doc, please turn off smart quotes and tracking changes. Don't send me a link, or paste your work directly into the body of your email.
* Please include the title and the author of the Newbery recipient in the cover letter with your submission.
* Please have all submitted works in "ready-to-publish" condition. At a minimum, this should include spellchecking the submission. Submissions including multiple spelling or grammatical errors are much less likely to be accepted.
* All work submitted must be the original work of the submitter, and the submitter must have the ability to grant the right to publish the work.

Grandmother's Necklace
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS GRANDMOTHERS' NECKLACE DEADLINE: Midnight, May 15th
Are you a grandmother? Have you had/do you have, a grandmother? This, then, is for you.
What is it? An anthology of poetry and prose — gems written by and about grandmothers (hence, the plural title) including some from those in the sub-Saharan African countries. This title stems from the beautiful Emerald Necklace Trail system in Petawawa, Ontario, Canada.
Wanted: A variety of pieces from men and women of diverse ethnic and experiential backgrounds — amusing, touching, encouraging, up-lifting anecdotes, short stories, letters and poetry.
Editor: Patricia (Anne) Elford, B.A., M.Div., editor of various genres of books for adults and children, of newsletters, individual pieces and articles, an award-winning professional poet and writer, frequently published in periodicals (e.g. The Presbyterian Record, Artspaper, Glad Tidings, Esprit, The Link), newspapers and anthologies, as well as on line.

PHOTOS: If submitting related photos (e.g. the grandmother, a special item which belongs/ed to the grandmother), use the camera as an external device and cut-and-paste images to a folder. When e-mailing, attach the image directly from its folder to the email; the way you would a Word document. Preference: digital photographs, 300 dpi minimum, high quality uncompressed JPEGs.
Please do not send originals through surface mail.
A brief bio and photo will be requested from all whose work is accepted for publication

Five Markets - Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry
The Tampa Marketing Company is seeking contributing authors for Five Books to be published in June 2009. The Collections for 2009 are:
1. Ghost Stories and Unusual Tales.
Fictional stories about ghosts, spirits, and the paranormal
2. What Sports (and Sports Viewing) Is Really About
Fictional stories about why people are so attached to sports activities. Stories can be about the activity itself, friendships made, or almost any aspect of the sports world.
3. Depression/Recession ? The Economy in 2009.
Fictional and/or testimonial stories about hardships faced in todays economy.
4. Relationships: the Good , the Bad, and the Funny
Fictional stories about the good, the funny, and the bad side of relationships.
5. Measures of Time, A Collection of Contemporary Poetry.
Creative poetry reflecting today's emotions, living, and times.
Compensation and Submission Information:
Short Story writers will be paid $50 upon approval of their story for publication and will receive 4 books upon publishing. Poets will receive $25 and 2 books for each poem accepted.
Authors may submit more than one story or poem. Fees will be paid within 30 days of receipt of an executed Writer Acceptance Agreement.
Story must be original, on topic, and all rights to the story must belong to the author.
Deadline for entry is March 31,2009.
Selections will be made by April 10, 2009.

"Discovery" / Boston Review 2009 Poetry Contest

Four winning authors will be awarded a reading at the 92nd Street Y in New York City (May 11, 2009 at 8:15pm), publication in the May/June 2009 issue of
Boston Review,
and $500.
1. The contest is open to poets who have not published a book of poems (chapbooks and self-published books included). Those who have a book contract at
the time of submission or who are subsequently awarded a book contract are not eligible for the contest if their book is scheduled for publication before
Fall 2009. Individual poems that have been or will be published in periodicals or anthologies may be submitted; however, at least two of the submitted
poems must be unpublished and under two pages in length.
2. Submit four identical sets of a typed ten-page manuscript. Each set is to contain the same ten pages in the same order. Include no more than one poem
per page. NO personal identification should appear on any of the poems; no copyright attributions for previously published poems should appear on the poems.
3. Photocopied manuscripts are acceptable. However, in the case of previously published poems, do not send photocopied pages of the periodical or book
in which the poem(s) originally appeared.
4. Please staple each manuscript; do not use paper clips.
5. Enclose one cover letter including your name, address and day and evening telephone numbers, as well as a list of the submitted poems in the order in
which they appear, with copyright attributions for published poems. Do not attach this cover letter to the manuscripts.
6. An entry fee of US$10.00 must accompany the submission. Please make checks (drawn on U.S. banks only) or money orders (in U.S. currency only) payable
to the 92nd Street Y, and attach them to your cover letter. DO NOT SEND CASH.
7. All poems must be original and in English (no translations) .
8. No contestant may submit more than one entry. No corrections can be accepted after receipt of the contest submission.
9. Entries must be received by January 16, 2009. This is not a postmark deadline. If you wish to receive confirmation of receipt of your manuscript, please
enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard (not envelope) and allow several weeks for its return. Due to the large number of submission received, manuscripts
cannot be returned. Winners will be contacted by telephone by the end of February; all contest entrants will be mailed the names of the winners and of
the judges shortly thereafter.

Zoland Poetry Anthology
Submission Guidelines
Please submit no more than 10 pages of previously unpublished poetry per reading period.

All submissions must include: Name, Address, Phone, & Email
- Fax submissions are not accepted.
- Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, if noted in the cover letter.
- Submissions will not be returned, though receipt of material will be confirmed,
if a self-addressed, stamped postcard is provided. - All poets will be contacted by May 1, if their work has been accepted.
Submissions will be accepted for the fourth Zoland Poetry annual beginning in early summer 2008 through March 15, 2009. We are no longer reading for the third annual, which will be out March 2009.
Payment Schedule
Payment for poetry submissions is $25/page with a maximum of $200. Zoland purchases First World Rights, non-exclusive one-time anthology rights, and the right to publish a selection of the work on the website. Copyright remains with the author. All authors and translators will receive two copies of the book, along with payment, which is made just after publication of the annual volume. Authors are responsible for proofing their respective pages from galleys.
Translations will be considered only if a letter, signed by the author or his/her agent granting rights to the translated work, accompanies the submission. Translators should also include brief biographical information about the author and hard copy of the original language text. Upon acceptance of the translation, electronic copy of the original language text will be requested for the website.

- Poems can be rhyming or non-rhyming, although we find that non-rhyming poetry reads better.
- We suggest that you write about real emotions and feelings and that you have some special person or occasion in mind as you write.
- Poems are judged on the basis of originality and uniqueness.
- English-language entries only, please.
- Enter as often as you like!
Poetry Contest Rules
All entries must be the original creation of the submitting author. All rights to the entries must be owned by the author and shall remain the property of the author. The author gives permission to SPS Studios, Inc. to publish and display the entry on the Web (in electronic form only) if the entry is selected as a winner or finalist. Jabberwocky

We are seeking short stories and poems for the fourth issue of Jabberwocky, scheduled for publication in July 2009.
The elements and bedrock of Jabberwocky can be largely described as the -ical approach: lyrical, whimsical, mythical, in all its forms, particularly short fiction, poetry, and illustrative. There are no boundaries, no restrictions, no genres. If you love the art of the written word, its structure, its flow, its language, I suspect you'll love Jabberwocky.
Original fiction only. No reprints. Multiple submissions accepted.
PAYMENT:
$.01 per word for fiction
$5.00 per poem
Payable on acceptance.
WORD LIMIT: 4000 words.
